Respiratory Tract Infections

Noor Health Life

Infections of the nose, throat, and lungs affect the respiratory tract.
These are usually viral infections, but sometimes bacteria can also cause them.  Most of these infections require a visit to a doctor.  The most common cause of this infection is the common cold.
Specialists divide respiratory tract infections into two types.
۔  Infections of the upper respiratory tract, including the nose and its lining and throat.
۔  Infection of the lower part of the respiratory tract, in which the lungs are affected.
Children are more susceptible to these infections than adults because they have a weakened immune system and are more susceptible to the virus.

Infections of the upper respiratory tract:

۔  Common cold
۔  Tonsils – An infection of the tonsils in the back of the throat.
۔  Sinus infection
The most common symptoms of an upper respiratory tract infection are cough, runny or stuffy nose, sore throat, sneezing and body aches.

Respiratory tract infections:

Flu  Can affect both upper and lower extremities.
Bronchitis  Infection of the airways entering the lungs
Pneumonia. Lung infection
Bronchiolitis.  Infection in young children that occurs in children under two years of age.
.TB.  Bacterial infections of the lungs.
Cough is a symptom of a lower respiratory tract infection, similar to an upper respiratory tract infection, but it is more severe and produces mucus.  Other symptoms include chest tightness, shortness of breath, difficulty breathing, or wheezing.

How to deal with these symptoms at home:

Many RTIs infections do not require medical attention and treatment.  Therefore, as soon as the symptoms appear, it can be controlled immediately by taking paracetamol or ibuprofen and with a lot of fluids and rest.
Sometimes antibiotics are not given because the cause of the infection is bacteria.
RTIs usually end in one to two weeks.

When to see a doctor:

۔  If you notice symptoms of pneumonia.  If coughing up blood from mucus or saliva.
۔  If you have had a heart, lung or kidney problem before.
۔  If you have been suffering from lung problems for a long time.
If you have low immunity.
If you have had a cough for more than 3 weeks.  Weight loss will be followed by chest pain or a lump in the neck causing respiratory tract disease.  For more information, contact Noor Health Life via email and WhatsApp.
